Data centre cooling & maintenance | Arctic Cooling

Data centre cooling designed, installed and maintained around uptime. Close control cooling for server and comms rooms across Heathrow, West London and the M4 corridor.

Data centre and server room cooling

Heat is the enemy of uptime. When cooling fails in a data centre or server room, temperatures climb in minutes and hardware starts to throttle, shut down or fail outright. Arctic Cooling designs, installs and maintains data centre cooling for server rooms and comms rooms across Heathrow, West London and the M4 corridor, and we keep it running with planned maintenance and fast reactive cover. The kit is only half the job. The other half is making sure it never stops.

We’re an M&E contractor based around Heathrow, with approaching 40 engineers delivering all our trades in-house. That means the people who design your cooling are the same people who install it, service it and turn out when something goes wrong. There’s no blame-chain between separate firms when a critical room is heating up.

What we do

We work in precision and close control cooling, not comfort air conditioning dressed up for a server room. The two are built for different jobs and it matters which one sits in front of your racks.

Close control and precision air conditioning

Close control air conditioning holds tight, stable conditions around the clock, controlling temperature and humidity together rather than just chasing a thermostat. That’s what a room full of electronics needs. We install and maintain CRAC and precision cooling units sized to the actual heat load of your equipment, with the airflow set up to feed cold air where the racks draw it. Get the airflow wrong and even the right unit struggles. We plan for that from the survey stage.

Resilient cooling built around no single point of failure

Critical rooms shouldn’t rely on one unit. We design cooling around N+1 thinking, so a failure or a service shutdown on one unit doesn’t take the room with it [confirm N+1 resilience scope with James]. If you’re specifying a new install or reviewing an existing setup that runs too close to the edge, we’ll tell you honestly where the risk sits and what it takes to close the gap.

Planned maintenance built around uptime

Maintenance on a critical room is planned around uptime, not convenience. We work to your change windows, coordinate any shutdown against your redundancy, and check the things that actually cause failures: filters, refrigerant charge, fan condition, drainage, controls and alarms. The point of planned preventative maintenance is to catch the fault before it catches you. A clogged filter or a slow refrigerant leak gives plenty of warning if someone is looking for it.

Fast reactive cover, up to 24/7 for critical rooms

Every client gets same-day reactive call-out. For maintenance-contract clients we offer faster response and up to 24/7 cover, which is the level a room full of live servers needs. When cooling drops out, response time is the whole game, so critical-room cover is written into the contract rather than left to chance.

Temperature, humidity and why they're controlled together

There’s a defined target range for both temperature and humidity in a server room, not just cool enough. Too hot and hardware throttles or fails. Too dry and you risk static; too damp and you risk condensation and corrosion. Standard comfort air conditioning holds temperature loosely and largely ignores humidity, which is fine for an office and wrong for a server room. Close control equipment manages both, tightly, all day and all night. That’s the difference that keeps a room stable.

The standard we bring

Here’s the honest measure of whether a contractor can be trusted with a room that can’t go down: what do they already run where failure isn’t an option?

Arctic Cooling is cleared to work airside at Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted, with signatory status and passes held directly in our own name. Airside, systems aren’t allowed to fail and there’s no room for excuses. We maintain cooling on Hold Baggage Screening and repair the Pre-Conditioned Air units that feed conditioned air to parked aircraft. That’s the same discipline a data centre needs from whoever looks after its cooling: tight process, controlled working, and a team that turns up and fixes it. If we can deliver at a live airport, we can deliver in your building.

We’re F-Gas certified, SafeContractor approved, Constructionline Gold, NICEIC Approved Contractor on the commercial side, a Daikin D1 installer and a Mitsubishi approved partner. The Daikin D1 tier is Daikin’s highest, which means extended manufacturer warranties on Daikin equipment. Our client list on the commercial and aviation side includes CBRE, British Airways, American Airlines and Heathrow.

One team across the whole room

A data centre or comms room fit-out touches more than the cooling plant. Power needs routing to the units, containment needs building, controls need wiring in, and someone needs to be on call once it’s all live. We do all of that ourselves. Air conditioning and refrigeration are two of our seven in-house trades, alongside electrical work through our NICEIC-approved commercial arm, mechanical and ventilation, and maintenance and service contracts to keep the room running once it’s handed over. One team, one point of contact, from the survey through to the maintenance visits, with nobody to blame but us if something’s missed.

Where we work

We’re based at Heathrow and work across West London and the Thames Valley as our core patch, taking in Hounslow, Slough, Staines, Uxbridge and the M4 and M25 corridor. From there we cover Greater London and the wider West London. Our air conditioning and precision cooling work runs across all of it, backed by the same in-house engineers.

Frequently asked questions

What is close control air conditioning and how is it different from standard comfort cooling?
Close control air conditioning holds tight, stable temperature and humidity around the clock, which is what electronics need. Standard comfort cooling only chases a temperature setpoint and largely ignores humidity, which is fine for an office but wrong for a server room. Close control units manage both conditions precisely, all day and night, so the room stays inside a safe envelope.
There’s a defined target range for both temperature and humidity in a server room, not just cool enough. Too hot and hardware throttles or fails; too dry risks static and too damp risks condensation and corrosion. That’s why the two are controlled together rather than temperature alone.
N+1 means you have one more cooling unit than the room strictly needs, so a failure or a planned service shutdown on any single unit doesn’t take the room down. It removes the single point of failure from your cooling. We design critical rooms around this thinking so uptime doesn’t hang on one unit staying healthy.
Every client gets same-day reactive call-out, and maintenance-contract clients get faster response with up to 24/7 cover for critical rooms. When cooling fails, response time is what matters most, so we write critical-room cover into the maintenance contract rather than leave it to chance. Our engineers are in-house, so the people who know your system are the ones who turn out.
